Welcome to sitecite. These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the sitecite browser extension (the "Extension") and the official sitecite web service operated by us at sitecite.dantenl.com (the "Official Service"). By accessing or using the Official Service, or by installing the Extension and connecting it to the Official Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms.
sitecite is an open‑source, hobby project provided "as is" for link shortening and text quoting. We make no guarantees about the availability, functionality, or suitability of the Service.
You may need to create an account to access certain features. Depending on the configuration of the Official Service, you can sign up using Discord, Google, or a username and password. You are responsible for safeguarding your login credentials. You must provide accurate and complete information and keep it up to date.
The account methods available on Third‑Party Instances are determined by the operator of that instance and are outside our control.
You retain ownership of your User Content. By submitting User Content to the Official Service, you grant us a worldwide, non‑exclusive, royalty‑free licence to store, display, and distribute that content solely in connection with the operation of the Service (for example, displaying quoted text in link previews or embeds).
You agree not to use the Service to create, share, or promote:
We reserve the right (but assume no obligation) to remove or disable any User Content, shortened link, or account at any time, for any reason or no reason, without prior notice.
When you use the quoting feature, the selected text is stored unencrypted on our servers and may be displayed publicly (for example, as part of a link preview on Discord or other platforms). Do not submit sensitive, confidential, or personally identifiable information that you would not want to be publicly visible.
The Extension can be configured to connect to any sitecite‑compatible server. These Terms only apply when you use the Extension in connection with the Official Service. If you connect the Extension to a Third‑Party Instance, your use is governed solely by the terms and policies of that instance, and we are not responsible for its content, data handling, safety warnings, or any other aspect of that instance.
The Official Service may integrate with URLhaus (or similar external services) to scan destination URLs and display warnings about potentially harmful websites. These warnings are provided as a courtesy only. We do not guarantee that all malicious links will be detected, and the warnings should not be considered a substitute for your own caution.
Third‑Party Instances may or may not enable safety warnings, and we have no control over whether such warnings are displayed. You acknowledge and accept that any link you follow through the Service (whether official or third‑party) is at your own risk.
The Official Service may allow authentication via Discord and Google. When enabled, these third‑party services are subject to their own terms and privacy policies. We do not control, and are not responsible for, their availability or data practices.
Additionally, URLhaus (operated by abuse.ch) is a third‑party service used for optional safety scanning. We make no representation about the completeness or accuracy of URLhaus data.
If you believe that material available on the Official Service
infringes your copyright, please contact us at

For copyright issues concerning content on a Third‑Party Instance, you must contact the operator of that instance directly. We cannot remove content from servers we do not control.
We may terminate or suspend your access to the Official Service at any time, with or without cause, and without prior notice or liability, including if you violate these Terms.
If you wish to delete your account and all associated data (including quotes and shortened links), please contact us at sitecite@dantenl.com. We will process your request within a reasonable time, subject to any technical constraints.
The Service is provided on an "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE" basis. To the fullest extent permitted by Dutch law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non‑infringement. We do not guarantee that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error‑free, or that safety warnings will always be accurate or present.
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall the operators of sitecite be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of data, use, or profits, arising out of or related to your use of the Service, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total liability for any claim shall not exceed the amount you have paid us, if any, in the twelve months preceding the claim.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits our liability for damages that cannot be lawfully limited under Dutch consumer protection law.
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the operators of sitecite from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including legal fees) arising from your User Content, your violation of these Terms, or your misuse of the Service.
These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Netherlands, without regard to its conflict of law principles. Any dispute arising from these Terms shall be submitted to the competent court in the Netherlands.
We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via the Service or by other means. Your continued use of the Service after the effective date of revised Terms constitutes your acceptance of the changes.
For any questions about these Terms, please contact us at sitecite@dantenl.com.
Please review our Privacy Policy to understand how we handle personal data. The Privacy Policy is incorporated into these Terms by reference.
These Terms are effective as of 2026-6-1.
